Pipe Band Championships Worth £1.7million to West Dunbartonshire Economy
Research shows the Scottish Pipe Band Championships brought £1.7million to the West Dunbartonshire economy in 2013.
The independent research was conducted on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council at last year’s event, and included interviews with 415 visitors. The information clearly demonstrates the economic benefit of hosting the championships in Dumbarton’s Levengrove Park.
The 2013 event attracted 21,000 visitors and 4,000 competitors to the area who spent an estimated £1.7million at the event and in local shops, restaurants, bars, guest houses and hotels.
Day visitors were estimated to have spent £774,788 while those who stayed overnight in the area spent £983,763.
The results show that for every £1 invested by West Dunbartonshire Council in hosting the event, the Championships achieved a return of £27.85 of net additional expenditure into the local economy, and £11.36 into the national economy.
The visitor survey also measured the experience of those attending and 99 per cent of spectators and competitors rated the championships as either good or very good, with 97% of respondents vowing to return to the event in future and 98% saying they would recommend it event to others.
Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, Convener of Infrastructure and Regeneration, said: “The Scottish Pipe Band Championships attract large numbers of visitors to our area from across the UK and abroad and are a fantastic opportunity to showcase West Dunbartonshire. More importantly, the event delivers for our economy bringing much needed income and jobs to the area.
“We are committed to hosting the championships until 2015 and hope to continue to strengthen our partnership with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.”
Councillor David McBride, Depute Convener of Infrastructure and Regeneration, said: “Our event is the only major championship on the RSPBA calendar where entry is free. The results of our survey support this approach. Levengrove Park is the perfect setting and every year the championships get better and better.
“The championships are a great family day out and I would encourage any residents who haven’t yet sampled this event to come along on Saturday, July 26.”
